Why Does It Take So Long For A Piece To Be Finished?

Each piece is handcrafted and some are carved in a long process of making a finished piece. First I throw the vessel on the wheel which is the quickest part. Then is must dry slowly so as it doesn’t crack (24 hours) Once it and about 20-30 other pieces are dry then they go in the kiln for their first firing which takes 8 hours to cook and then an additional 10 hours to cool to room temperature. Then it is time for glazing (how they get the gorgeous colors). The glazing process could take up to 2 or 3 days because each piece gets multiple layers and they must dry fully before adding a new layer. Each step in this beautiful process is slow and patient which is another reason why I love it; it cannot be forced or rushed. Lastly they go in for the glaze firing which is another 12+ hours heating and cooling.

Can I Order A Custom Piece?

I love taking custom orders, just understand that rush orders are not optional due to the time it takes for each piece to be made. Specific measurements are not easily followed as each piece shrinks significantly in the firing process. If you have a request just let me know and you can attach an image of the coloring you have seen me use in the past and I will try my best to replicate it for you.

I am currently working out of my home and do not have a physical studio location yet (crossing my fingers for this year). You are free to order online however if you do want to see the physical product before buying, I have recently been collaborating with a few wonderful small businesses and they sell my products in their store. Some of my pieces will allow for buying multiple quantities of them. If that is the case then the image will give you the idea of color and style, however due to the nature of it being handmade and the unpredictability of glazes each and every piece will be completely unique! Which is super exciting. You never have to worry about someone else having the exact same one.

How Do You Figure Out Your Pricing?

I price my pieces by a few things. First is the cost of materials. Basic glaze and clay doesn’t have any extra charge associated with it, however pieces with Gold Lustre or Opal Lustre will be more expensive because those are more expensive products to use in the creation of the product. Second is the time that it takes. Mugs are usually the most expensive due to the amount of time waiting for them to dry and also creating, shaping and attaching the handles. Carving and intricate hand-painting as well as size could be a reason for an item price to be slightly higher.

I ordered a piece online, why does it have newspaper in it?

I try my best to be an environmentally friendly small business and recycling and reusing old newspapers and phone books for padding material is one way that I try to do that. It also helps me to keep costs low and therefore charge less for shipping.. As well as using biodegradable shipping material and trying to build a studio that is solar powered.
